Soldiers of the Regiment Captain Julian Lawson Whalley 2nd Lieutenant, 4th Militia Battalion, King's Own Royal Lancaster Regiment, 1903. Regular Officer 1905-08, resigned and travelled in USA and Canada and enlisted at Lancaster in 1915 in the University and Public Schools Brigade. Commissioned in June 1916. Became Captain Julian Lawson Whalley, Essex Regiment, 3rd Battalion, Essex Regiment, attached to 9th Battalion. Wounded and missing at Cambrai, whilst in command of his battalion, 1 Dec 1917, died of wounds in a German Field Hospital, France 3 Dec 1917, age 33. Buried in Caudry British Cemetery, France. Unmarried, a keen golfer, member of Lancaster and Morecambe Golf Clubs, President of Lancashire Golf Union in 1911. Only son of the late Colonel J Lawson Whalley, JP, Colonel Commandant of the 3rd and 4th Militia Battalions, King’s Own Royal Lancaster Regiment, and of Lady Ashton, also step son of Lord Ashton, of Ryelands, Skerton.
