The Great War Centenary 1917 - Exploration Day

Boomtown - From Front Line to White Lund

At Lancaster City Museum from Saturday 13th May 2017 to Sunday 12th November 2017.
Open Tuesday to Sunday 10am to 5pm (including Mondays in the school summer holidays).

On 30th September 2017 we held an Exploration Day in partnership with the Regional Heritage Centre, Department of History, Lancaster University.


Dr Corinna Peniston-Bird of the History Department at Lancaster University introduces the days events.


Steve Irwin, from Blackburn Museum and Art Gallery, gives an overview of the White Lund Munitions works and the fire and explosions of 1st October 1917.

Simon Phillipson discusses the effect of total war on Morecambe and Lancaster.


Dr Sam Riches, of the Regional Heritage Centre and Councillor Roger Mace, the Mayor of Lancaster and Chairman of the Friends of Lancaster City Museum, which granted money towards both the Boomtown Exhibition and the Study Day.


Councillor Roger Mace, the Mayor of Lancaster, speaks on the anniversary of the White Lund Explosions and introduces the Blasted project, led by the Friends of Lancaster City Museum and Funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund.


The audience for the day which  also included a presentation by Chris Workman on coroner's inquests concerning the White Lund site, 1916-1918, and a round table discussion on the role of the fire services.


Alice Booth, from Lancaster Arts, and the artists of the Blasted project, led by the Friends of Lancaster City Museum - with a quick taster of what is coming in November!
