WAR! 1914

Lancaster and The King's Own go to War.

Generously supported by the Sir John Fisher Foundation.

A Last Message in a Bottle

Shell encrusted beer bottle from the Crown Brewery, Fulham, which was thrown into the sea from the SS Saturnia on 22nd August 1914 and caught in the nets of ‘Egret’, a Grimsby trawler, on 6th March 1922.

The Message:

“To The Editor, The Daily Mirror

Well on the way to the front. Just seen the last of England. Mean to fight like Britons. Hope to see Leicester Square again shortly. From the boys of the King's Own (R.L.R.), Dover, SS Saturnia. 22nd August 1914.”

Accession Number: KO0151/01

“Sea’s War Secret”
The Daily Mirror reported the finding of the bottle in March 1922:
“It is written in a well-formed hand but is unsigned, and there are consequently no means of discovering the fate of the writer, whose spirit of light courage, typical of those days is revealed in his words.”

Accession Number: KO0682/01
