The Great War 1914-1918

The Beginning of the end?

The entry of the United States into the war was long awaited, but very important to the result. In February 1915 a German submarine torpedoed the British passenger liner, Lusitannia, and almost 1,200 people drowned, including 118 American citizens. The American government strongly opposed the Germans warfare at sea. Two years later in January 1917 the Germans resumed 'unrestricted submarine warfare'. There submarines would fire upon all shipping in an attempt to starve the British into submission. President Wilson provoked by the loss of American ships, declared war on Germany on 6th April 1917.

The entry of the US into the war greatly assisted the allies:

bulletprovide new ships and convoys carrying food and raw materials
bullet4 million American soldiers
bulletmajor boost to the moral of the allies
