Private Daniel Brown MM, number 3711805, 2nd King’s Own. KO2051/01
“On 26th March 1944 Private Brown was one of a patrol of No 41 Column
recce platoon sent out to locate a Japanese post known to be approaching
the airstrip at Broadway. At 05 30 Hrs on 27th March 1944
the patrol found the enemy in harbour, the patrol entered the enemy
harbour and shot it up and dispersed. Private Brown hid in some tall
grass and observed the enemy. When he eventually tried to withdraw he
was attacked by three Japs who shot him in the hand, bayoneted him twice
in the chest and struck him with rifle butts until stopped by a Japanese
interpreter. Private Brown was then questioned and told he would have
to lead the Japs to the guns at Broadway. He was tied up and all his
clothes, except his trousers, were taken from him. With his arms still
bound he led the Japs to Broadway arriving at around 23 00. Instead of
taking them by the covered approach he took them out into the airstrip
in front of the bunkers, knowing his action would result in fire being
directed at him as well as the enemy. A Bren gun opened fire and
wounded Private Brown above the left eye and at the same time killing
the three Japs behind him. He then ran in to the middle of the strip
where he was found the next morning by troops at Broadway.
He brought back much valuable information with him.”

“Private Edwards was employed as a despatch rider at the cross roads
south east of Vlamertinghe on the afternoon of 27th May 1940. He was on
duty controlling traffic when this point was under hostile shell and
machine gun fire. Without regard to his personal safety he carried out
his task until all his units transport had safely passed this danger

Statement regarding the act of No. 240919 Corporal A Gray 1/5th
Battalion KORL Regt. for which he was awarded the Military Medal
“During the night of 14-15th August 1916, this NCO (then a Private) was
with a Machine Gun Detachment in an advanced position in Trones Wood,
covering a working party.
The Germans opened a heavy fire, killed the officer in charge of the
party, and also the NCO in charge of the Machine gun. “Gray” took
charge of the party, reorganised the men and generally rallied his
comrades, thus holding the position in face of a heavy fire until
subsequently relieved some hours later”
