First World War - Caton Road Place of Internment

German Prisoner of War/Internment Camp Watercolours

These watercolours are in the collection of Lancaster City Museum

The artist of these water colours was Adolph Ernest Jean von du Stratton as stated in the obituary or Adolf von der Straeten in other sources.

The Isle of Man's Peel City Guardian of 30th November 1918 reports the following:

Alien Inquests

High Bailiff LaMothe on Monday, conducted inquiries as to the cause of death of four aliens who had died during internment in Knockaloe Camp.

The first was Adolph Ernest Jean von du Stratton, who was a German, No 17052, and was interned in Camp 4, Compound 1. He was 33 years of age, and was a ship’s steward. He was arrested on the RMS Arabic off Queenstown, on 16th August 1914, and was transferred to Knockaloe from Lancaster on 4th May 1915. He died in Camp 4 Hospital on 23rd November. He had no English address.

Dr. McGaegh said the deceased had suffered a great deal from chest trouble, and he was admitted into the hospital on 21st November suffering from pneumonia. He showed symptoms of heart failure from the beginning and death was due to heart failure and pneumonia.

Two fellow prisoners identified the body.

Originally buried in Knockaloe, Isle of Man, his body was transferred in 1962 to the German cemetery at Cannock Chase.
