Correspondence and Note Books Set Two

 

Captain Albert Hodgkinson was commissioned as Honorary Lieutenant and Quartermaster of the 5th Battalion (Territorial Force) in 1909.  He was mobilised in the summer of 1914 and served as Quartermaster throughout the war, serving with the battalion in France, Flanders, Brussels, Army of the Rhine and Ireland until they arrived back to Lancaster in late 1919.
The collection of material was described by him as "the carbon copies of every message I ever sent in the war".  Albert Hodgkinson was Mentioned in Despatches three times.

“This is the first QM note and correspondence book, prior to using the usual Army Book 152.”  “QM Private in Tin Box”  18 Feb 1915 to 8 Apr 1915.  Book printed by Waterlow & Sons Ltd, London.
This first note book includes notes which would have been important to a Quartermaster whose battalion was new in theatre and on operations.  The 1st/5th Battalion was with the 83rd Brigade in the 28th Division, and were along side the 2nd Battalion, King’s Own Royal Lancaster Regiment and the 3rd Monmouthshire Regiment.

Brigade Quartermaster Notes and Correspondence 8 Feb 1917 to 27 Nov 1917
Hodgkinson had a temporary appointment as Brigade Quartermaster and his notes and letters include:

bullet Fire precautions
bullet scrap iron
bullet Sanitary officers inspection, resulting in comments on removal of rubbish, removal of night urinal near cookhouse, scrap iron, improvements, grease traps etc.
bullet Units included: 166 Machine Gun Company (unsafe fire places and braziers, general tidiness), 166 Brigade Transport Lines, (fire buckets, latrine seats and stores hut to be kept clean), 1st/5th North Lancashire Regiment, 1st/5th South Lancashire Regiment, 1st/10th Liverpool Scottish.
bullet Letter QM to Staff Captain 166 Brigade concerning the repair of the general’s boots.
bullet Points from Visit of DAAQMG VIII Corps, 23 Mar 1917: inspection of rifles; butchers tables; hedges and fences to be kept clear of tins; duckboards; cooking utensils to be clean; the quartermaster must see that faeces and urine are properly disposed of; latrine buckets, seats and paper; meat safes; biscuit ration; mess tins inspected etc.
