Soldiers of the Regiment

Lieutenant William Ernest Streatfield Woodgate

Born 1877. Eldest son of E Woodgate Esq. of Rochester. Commissioned as 2nd Lieutenant 8th September 1897. Lieutenant 1899.  2nd Battalion, King's Own Royal Lancaster Regiment. Served in South African Campaign with the Mounted Infantry. Was mortally wounded whilst in charge of a picquet at Vryheid, which was attacked by the Boers at 2-15 am. on 11th December 1900. Being unarmed, he picked up a hammer and rushed at the Boers, who shot him at close quarters. Died 12th December 1900.
