Instructions for Sergeant J Miles

Instructions for the guidance of Sergeant J Miles, 1st Battalion, Royal Lancaster Regiment proceeding per Royal Mail Steamer “Don” to Netley Hospital, in charge of Major R F Devereux, 2nd West India Regiment, an Insane, with an escort of three privates.

1. You will be altogether guided in your treatment of Major Devereux by any instructions given you by the Surgeon of the Ship, and you are to obey all orders received from him.

2. The 3 orderlies in attendance will receive all orders from, or through you, and they are under your orders and your are responsible for their discipline.

3. Major Devereux is never to be permitted to be alone in his cabin – one orderly by day, and two by night being always present.

4. You will take care that he has a cold tea water bath every morning before breakfast, however, if he objects, no force is to be used to compel him to bathe.

5. It is desirable that he should spend as much time as possible in the open air, on the upper deck, subject to the approval of the Surgeon of the ship and while there two orderlies should be in close attendance.

6. See yourself that his meals are properly served by the orderlies. Encourage him to take as much nourishing food as possible. A knife and fork are not allowed.

7. No liquor of any kind is to be given to him, without the prescription of the Surgeon of the Ship.

8. On no account is he to be permitted to remain on the upper deck after sunset.

9. He is not to be permitted to shave himself, or to be shaved by anyone. No razor or knife to be allowed to be in his possession.

10. Attend to the state of his bowels, he constantly suffers from Costively and when he requires medicine report to the Surgeon of the ship.

11. On arrival at Southampton you are to proceed without delay to Netley Hospital, and hand him over to the Orderly Medical Officer. His medical documents have been sent by this same mail, by post to the Principal Medical Officer, at Netley Hospital.
