1st/5th Battalion, King's Own Royal Lancaster Regiment at Sevenoaks, 1914-15


Dr Bill George, from Lancaster, and Medical Officer to the 1st/5th Battalion, is seen inoculating Sergeant Clarkson at Sevenoaks, November or early December 1914. 
Dr George was commissioned into the Royal Army Medical Corps in 1913 and won the Military Cross during the war.
Sergeant Richard William Clarkson, number 1542 and later 240238, enlisted on 13th June 1913 and arrived in France with the rest of the battalion on 14th February 1915.  He lived at Addlecroft, Lancaster and was employed as a clerk.  He was wounded at Givenchy on 9th April 1918.  After the war he became a policeman in Lancaster.

The caption for this photograph names Lieutenant Lloyd Evans and 2nd Lieutenant R Gardner at St. Martin's, Sevenoaks.  Both were later commissioned in 1915.

Group of five soldiers of the 5th Battalion, King's Own Royal Lancaster Regiment at Sevenoaks, circa November 1915.  Note in the window at the far right of the photograph are a set of photographs, some of which appear to be featured on this page, indicating that the photographer was clearly present for a few days.
The photograph is marked on the rear in pencil 'T Seed'.  It is believed that this is Ted Seed, who is probably from Blackpool.  Records show that he was later Acting Sergeant John Edward Seed, number 1356/240145 of the 1st/5th Battalion of the King's Own. 
The photographer is marked as W Johnston, 4 Great John Street, Lancaster, and numbered '73' on the front.
