Roll of Honour of Soldiers of the King's Own Royal Regiment, Lancaster, who died between 1920 and 1939.

The Commonwealth War Graves Commission commemorates all soldiers of the regiment who died in World War One, and some up to 1921.  The list below is compiled from The Lion and The Rose, the regimental journal, and other non-official sources.  It is expected that it is not a full list.  Some of those recorded a members of the Territorial Army and are recorded as having died, but only rarely whilst serving.

bullet Private John (Jack) James Adams, number 3707136, Depot, King’s Own Royal Regiment. Died after three weeks training at Bowerham Barracks Lancaster.  7/8 Sep 1928.  Buried Lancaster Cemetery.
bullet Corporal James Adams, number 3710756, 2nd Battalion, King’s Own Royal Regiment. Died as a result of dysentery at the General Hospital Sarafand, Palestine on 13 Nov 1938 age 24 years. 
bullet Private  J Ainsworth, number 3526673, King’s Own Royal Regiment.  Died 11 Jul 1937.  Whilst this soldier is listed in some records as King's Own Royal Regiment, he is buried in Nicosia War Cemetery and his grave is marked 1st Battalion, Manchester Regiment.  His number is a Manchester Regiment number and the Manchester Regiment were based on Cyprus at the time.  This listing appears to be incorrect, but is retained for information.

bullet Private Walter Barlow, number 3712249, 2nd Battalion, King’s Own Royal Regiment. Died in Sarafand Hospital, Palestine, as a result of injuries sustained in a motor accident 13 May 1939.
bullet Company Sergeant Major John Barry, number 7212729, King’s Own Royal Regiment.  Died at Aldershot on 13 Feb 1928, records state that he was discharged on 29 Jan 1918.

bullet Private Eli Breakwell, number 3701821, 1st Battalion, King’s Own Royal Regiment.  Died on 23 Jun 1921 Buried in Ulverston Cemetery, Son of John and Mary Breakwell, and husband of Edith Maud Breakwell, of 3 Spring Gardens, Ulverston.  Born in Barrow in Furness, age 25 (some records state 32) at time of death.
bulletPrivate William Herbert Alfred Brown, number 3702555, King's Own Royal Regiment.  Died 16 Aug 1934.  Attested for military service at Chelmsford on 8 April 1918 at the age of 14 years and 2 months, with the first number 38710. 
bullet Private William Budsworth, number 3521538, King’s Own Royal Regiment.  Died 16 Feb 1930 at Aldershot.
bullet Private Abraham Budworth, number 3701734, King’s Own Royal Regiment.  Died 24 Nov 1926 following fracture of the spine by fall off roof, accidental.
bullet Sergeant John Carrick DCM, number 3702413, 2nd Battalion, King’s Own Royal Regiment.  Accidentally drowned, Rangoon, Burma, 29 Oct 1922.  Originally number 2490, 200476 of the 1/4th Battalion, King’s Own, then 30759 with the 2nd Battalion, King’s Own Royal Regiment and finally 3702413.
bullet Major Cyril Rodney Carter, 2nd Battalion, King’s Own Royal Regiment. Accidentally slipped on deck of troop ship from India to Sudan and died in Port Said or Port Sudan hospital on 17 Dec 1929.  (Conflicting reports to hospital location). 
bullet Private Albert Casson, number 3703772, King’s Own Royal Regiment.  Died 15 Aug 1926 Barrow in Furness.
bullet Private Thomas Newton Chantler, number 3704686, King’s Own Royal Regiment.  Died 29 May 1925 from road traffic accident.
bullet Private Robert Chrystal, number 3852802, 1st Battalion King’s Own Royal Regiment. Headquarters Wing. Died in the Citadel Military Hospital, Cairo, Egypt, 24 Jun 1934, aged 24 years.
bullet Private John Clarke, number 3709473, King’s Own Royal Regiment.  Died at the Military Hospital, York, 11 Jul 1930.
bullet Private John Alfred Clayton, number 3702848, formerly 51002, 2nd Battalion, King’s Own Royal Regiment.  Died, accidentally, at Maymyo, Burma, 14 Nov 1920, age 20 years. Son of Mr and Mrs Clayton of Miles Platting, Manchester.  Now buried in Taukkyan War Cemetery, Burma.
bulletLance Corporal John Joseph (James) Colgan, number 3524713, 2nd Battalion, King's Own Royal Regiment.  Killed whilst on patrol, on the night of 24th/25th September 1938.  Lance Corporal Colgan was on patrol when he got out of his truck and was shot by an Arab sniper, believed to be from the village of Yibna.

bullet Private Thomas Robert Cragg, number 3703364, 1st Battalion, King’s Own Royal Regiment. Died in Military Hospital, Shorncliffe, Kent, 8 Jan 1923.The body taken to Lancaster for burial.

bullet Private James Digan, number 3853868, 2nd Battalion, King’s Own Royal Regiment. Killed in Action at Gaza, Palestine 12 Nov 1938 - age 26 years.   2nd Battalion digest records shot dead in town of Gaza, he was a member of a traffic control post operating in the town.

bullet Lance Sergeant Maurice Hensey, number 3707017, King’s Own Royal Regiment.  Died in Government Civil Isolation Hospital, Haifa, Palestine from malaria, 10 Oct 1931. “A popular and very cheerful NCO”. After a preliminary service at the Chapel of the Carmelite Sisters, Haifa, he was buried in Sarafand Military Cemetery.

bullet Private William John Holland, number 3702691, King’s Own Royal Regiment.  Died on the night of 12/13 Jun 1931 as a result of a motor cycle accident at Civilian Hospital, Chorley.

Found dead in the garden of his home “Flagstaff House”, Main Barracks, Wellington, South India, 2 Mar 1937. Cause of death: gunshot wound in the head. Buried in the Military Cemetery, Wellington. Commanding Officer of the Battalion. Born 11 Dec 1891. Educated: Oundle School, Northamptonshire &  RMC Sandhurst. 2nd Lieutenant  11 Oct 1911 Lieutenant  13 Sep 1914, Captain 10 Oct 1915.  Major 1 Dec 1928 Lieutenant Colonel 8 Nov 1935. Severely wounded & prisoner of war: 26 Aug 1914. A flower stand to his memory was placed In the Regimental Chapel. Wellington Memorial.

bullet Sergeant William Longhorn, number 3704618, 5th King’s Own Royal Regiment. Died Friday 13 Aug 1937 whilst at annual camp with 5th Battalion, King’s Own Royal Regiment at Ramsey, Isle of Man.  Had served First World War with 5th King’s Own and rejoined after the war.  Died age 44 years buried at Skerton Cemetery, Lancaster.

Lance Corporal Percival, the deceased’s brother was NCO in charge of the vehicle.  Buried in Widnes Cemetery, Lancashire.  Son of Mark and Mary Percival of 12, Alpha Street, Widnes.
