141 Days: The Battle of the Somme Clocks Go Forward In order to make the maximum use of daylight, the clocks on the Western Front were moved forward one hour on 26th June 1916. It was an idea already introduced in Britain, the same year. British Summer Time ran for the first time from 21st May to 1st October 1916.
