Corporal Albert Ernest White


Grave of In-Pensioner Corporal Albert Ernest White, Brookwood Military Cemetery.
Died on 7th January 1975 aged 76 years at the Infirmary, Royal Hospital, Chelsea.
‘Chalkie’ White, number 3702186, as he was popularly known, was a most likeable chap and was a very keen member of the Regimental Association. He entered the Royal Hospital in July 1963 as an in-pensioner. ‘Chalkie’ has a remarkable service record. He joined the Royal Navy in 1915 at the age of 17 and served (as number L/6190) with them until 1917; one month later he joined the Royal Flying Corps and served with them until 1918, and then rejoined the Navy till 1920. He enlisted in the King’s Own on 29th April 1920, at Whitehall, London, and served in both battalions, being promoted to Sergeant in April 1928.   His son, Richard Stanley Albert White is recorded as having died at Murree on 23rd April 1929.  After setting up home in Fleetwood in 1935, he retired on 23rd October 1937.  He re-enlisted on 9th March 1939 and on the outbreak of World War Two he rejoined The King’s Own and served with them until 1941, when he transferred to the Recce Corps and finally to the Royal Armoured Corps, retiring in 1945.
