Major General Edward Robert Prevost Woodgate

Ensign 7th April 1865 from the 56th Fusiliers in India. Served with the Regiment in Abyssinia in 1868. The Ashantee War 1873-74, Zulu War, 1879, Commanding the 1st Battalion King’s Own between 1893 and 1897, and then in 1898 was in Sierra Leone.

Major General 13th November 1899 to command the 9th Brigade in South African War. The 9th Brigade landed at Durban with the goal of the Relief of Ladysmith.

Mortally wounded on 24th January 1900 on Spion Kop and died two months later.

This diary covers his departure from Liverpool on 9th April 1898.  He arrived in Sierra Leone on 25th April 1898 where he remained until 19th September, during the Hut Tax War, when he went to the Canary Islands.  He returned to Sierra Leone on 28th October 1898.

bulletLetter from Captain Birley, Adjutant, 6th King’s Own re the death of Major Sandbach who fell at Gallipoli who had been one of General Woodgate’s officers.
Major William Sandbach, 6th Battalion, King's Own Royal Lancaster Regiment, killed in action 10th August 1915 (Turkish attack, Sari Bair, Gallipoli) Joined King’s Own from Royal Fusiliers (City of London Regiment) on 20th January 1886 as Lieutenant. Promoted Captain in 1895 and Served in the South African War and was wounded at Spion Kop. Left the King’s Own in 1903, to return during the Great War.
