Portrait in oils. Mackay joined the 4th Militia Battalion of the King’s Own in September 1897 and was embodied for service in the South African (Boer) War on 13th December 1899. He received a regular commission in the King’s Own on 21st April 1900 and served with the Mounted Infantry. He was killed in an ambush on 26th September 1901, at the age of 23.
