Group of the 3rd (Special Reserve) Battalion, King's Own Royal Lancaster Regiment, at Camp at Appleby, 1914.  The photograph is by A Hitchen of Northwich, but the postcard is postmarked Appleby 8th July 1914.  It is believed the 'x' marks Albert Smith of Blackburn.
Private Albert Smith, number 1700, was called up from the Reserve and mobilised for service in the First World War.  He went overseas on 1st November 1914 to join the 1st Battalion on the Western Front.  He was killed in action on 24th May 1915, at the age of 26.  He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Ypres Menin Gate Memorial.  His mother, to whom the postcard was sent, Mrs Ruth Smith, lived at 26 Whalley Old Road, Blackburn.
Accession Number: KO1992/02

Group of the 3rd (Special Reserve) Battalion, King's Own Royal Lancaster Regiment, at Camp at Appleby, circa 1913/1914.  The photograph is again by H Hitchen of Northwich, but the photographers imprint is slightly different to the previous image, so it may not be the same year.
