Collections - Bibles and Prayer Books

The museum's collection contains a varied range of bibles and prayer books, either used by the regiment or carried by individual soldiers.

A well worn Soldier's New Testament printed specially for soldiers, and issued to Private Walter Lichfield of the 1st Battalion, King's Own Royal Lancaster Regiment in 1900.

"The Soldier's Bible" carried by Major T W Harley who served in the 9th Battalion of the King's Own in Salonika in World War One.

Abyssinian Coptic Bible
‘Presented to the Revd. Fisher Turner by ? Stokes Esq 1/4 King’s Own Royal Regiment.  In token of the esteem and friendship he had for his son Frederic Cooper Turner Esq, 1/4 King’s Own Royal Regiment.  Senafe, Abyssinia, 26 May 1868.”
Frederic  Cooper Turner’s medals are in the museum’s collection.  Prior to joining the  army he served as a midshipman in the Indian Navy 1858-1863.  Present at the assault at Fort Beyt and with the Naval Brigade in the Okamunder Field Force at the Capture of Dwarka in 1859, and in the China Campaign and Capture of Taku forts, 1860.  Ensign 8 Aug 1865 with 1st Foot.  Transferred to King’s Own on 22 Aug 1865, served in Abyssinia.  Lieutenant 1870.  Adjutant 1876-8.  Captain 1878.  Promoted Major 1883 to Northamptonshire Regiment, later Lieutenant Colonel.  Died 26 Jan 1921.  KOLIB0066

New Testament produced by the YMCA (Young Men’s Christian Association) including Lord Robert’s Message to the Troops, 25 Aug 1914 printed on the inside front cover.  Named in the rear cover to Bamber, number 406015, 23rd Rifle Brigade, of 55 Moorgate, Lancaster.  Dated 11 Apr 1917.  Private Albert Bamber, number 1191, also served in the King’s Own.  KO2198/09

New Testament.  Presented by the Canadian Bible Society to Canadian Soldiers in the War of 1914.  Named to Sergeant George Edward Harrison, number 23629, 8th Battalion, King’s Own Royal Lancaster Regiment.  Who died of wounds 1 Sep 1918, age 31.  Buried in Bac-du-Sud British Cemetery, Baillenlval.  Husband of Gertrude Harrison of 4 Cutler Green, Stackstead, Bacup, Lancashire.  KO1539/08

“Presented to Private John William Heap, number 2035, 2nd Battalion, King’s Own Royal Lancaster Regiment, Satara.”  John William Heap was born in 1869 and died on 12 Aug 1928.  Appears to have enlisted in the 1890s and served with 2nd Battalion, King’s Own.  KO2424/04

The Catholic Soldiers & Sailor's Prayer book 1858
Named to Adam Holmes, 52nd Regiment, Light Infantry.  Born 1 Apr 1794 at Wormhill, near Buxton and baptized May 1794, confirmed in 1822, first communion in 1819.  Enlisted in 1811.  Wounded at Neville in 1813 through the knee.  Lost a leg at Waterloo on 18 Jun 1815 in the great charge on the Sunday night. Married Mary Furness and died 1878.  KO0928/01

Book of Common Prayer  Presented to “Alfred Huddleston, with the prayers and good wishes of his friends at Cartmel Priory Church, 26 Mar 1917.” 
Private Alfred Huddleston, number 34460, King’s Own Royal Lancaster Regiment, attested for military service on 10th December 1915 and was mobilised on 26th March 1917.  He joined the 1st Battalion in France on 17th June 1917, and transferred to the 8th Battalion Loyal North Lancashire Regiment on 2nd July.  He was wounded on 21st July and arrived back in England on 13th August.  The Cartmel Parish Magazine said that he was wounded but safe in the Canadian Hospital, and the next issue in September 1917 said that he had suffered a cracked skull, and was in hospital in Sheffield.  He returned to service with the Labour Corps as number 528183. KO1927/01
